Proven Processes

Through our proven processes of pinpointing student skill deficits, sequencing skill instruction, and providing differentiated small-group intervention instruction, we have helped hundreds of schools create sustainable gains in reading achievement.

Step-by-Step Process

A three-step process is used: 1) Begin with assessment using a curriculum based measurement (CBM) tool (e.g., DIBELS®, AIMSweb®) to identify students who are below benchmark; 2) Administer a diagnostic screener to pinpoint student skill deficits; and 3) Use data from both the CBM and diagnostic screener to place students in skill groups to receive focused instruction addressing those skill deficits.

We have developed many techniques to help teachers learn to use assessment data to place students in groups. Dr. Susan. L. Hall, author of I’ve DIBEL’d, Now What?, is a leader in teaching educators how to use data to place students in appropriate groups. Our consultants help grade-level teams learn how to use all of their data to form initial groups, as well as to regroup after progress monitoring.

Additionally, our processes include learning the characteristics for what makes intervention instruction effective. Explicit instruction includes a focus on teacher modeling through an “I Do, We Do, You Do” modeling cycle that supports the student in mastering the strategy or skill. We take you through the Response to Intervention (RTI) process step by step―from initial implementation to sustaining gains―and provide the guidance and support you need. Our practical, research-based assessment and instructional materials and online courses have been used in schools nationwide, including entire urban districts. We track the success of our approach and materials with our client schools through careful monitoring of student data.

Clients who use our processes and materials regularly improve reading scores from fewer than 50% of students at benchmark to 80%–90% at benchmark in a single school year, with even greater gains after two years.
